The Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the western end of Kangaroo Island, between the Kelly Hill Caves Conservation Park and the Flinders Chase National Park. It is ideally located to offer you the opportunity to enjoy the world famous and unique natural environment of Kangaroo Island.

We are pleased to offer you a range of holiday accommodation to suit every budget. We have the Hanson Bay Cabins - a choice of six self-contained beach-side holiday cabins with truly spectacular views of the beautiful turquoise waters of Hanson Bay. We also have the Farmhouse Hostel available - which is a spacious farmhouse nestled in a pretty native bush setting.

The Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is famous for its abundant native bird and animal wildlife. During your stay at the Sanctuary you will have every opportunity to enjoy the best of Australian native animals such as Koalas, Kangaroos, Tammar Wallabies, Possums and Echidnas. Our Koala Walk is open every day for Koala viewing and is recognised as the best place on Kangaroo Island to see a sustainable population of Koalas in the wild.

We offer nocturnal driving tours and guided walks of the Sanctuary so you can experience Australian native marsupials up "close and personal". The Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is also a bird watchers paradise - with resident Blue Wrens, Scarlet Robins, Lorikeets, Crimson Rosellas, Black Cockatoos, Scrub Wrens, Bush Stone-Curlews, Crescent Honey-eaters, Banded Plovers, and Cape Barren Geese.

Volunteering at Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary[]

Kangaroo Island is considered to be " Australia 's Galapagos" and has been voted the fifth best island in the world and best island destination in the Asia-Pacific region. The Island is home to; sea lions, fur seals, endemic kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, echidnas, platypus, goannas, 255 bird species (many rare or endangered), possums, bandicoots and whales, which pass by the island in winter.

Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary gives volunteers the opportunity to have hands on experience in Eco-tourism and daily interaction with many of the species listed above. You will have the chance to work at the largest privately owned conservation property on Kangaroo Island which covers 9,500 acres and has 14km of pristine coastline . You will enjoy a variety of experiences, which will include mingling with international guests, working with wildlife and restoration of habitat.

In October 1998, Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary was added to The Register of the National Estate and details of the property can be viewed on-line at the Australian Heritage Database.

Our animals live free in their natural habitat and environment. The animals are unafraid and visitors can experience wildlife 'very close'. Nocturnal tours are conducted each evening to give visitors to the Island that ultimate wildlife experience.

Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary hosts travellers from all over the world to be part of our volunteer program. Volunteers finish the program having achieved great satisfaction with their individual contribution towards the Sanctuary and its efforts to save endangered species.
