About Lanta Animal Welfare[]

Lanta Animal Welfare (LAW) is based on Koh Lanta in the south west of Thailand. LAW’s objective is to relieve the suffering and pain of the animals on the island through sterilisation and care. To date, we have sterilised and treated over 10,000 animals.

LAW receives no funding for this work, other than your donations and the profits from the Time for Lime restaurant and cooking school. We urgently need your help to continue our work with animals in Thailand.

You can help us by:

♥ Adopting one of our friendly dogs or cats from Thailand (our animal adoption programme makes taking an animal from Thailand to your country a very simple process) and you will have given a beautiful animal the home it deserves.

♥ Donating money or medical and general supplies for our animals. Every month, we spend more money on medication and food than we have coming in. You can donate via this website. Talk to your local vet clinic and see if they can spare any much needed medication.

♥ Volunteering to work with animals in Thailand for at least one month. If you are an experienced vet, vet nurse or simply an animal lover, we need you! If you would like to volunteer there is lots of volunteer information about how you can help Lanta Animal Welfare on our website.

LAW Sterilization Centre[]

In January 2010, Lanta Animal Welfare opened the first Animal Sterilisation Centre on the island. We can now perform surgery and treat sick animals in a controlled environment – as of December 2012 we have sterilised and treated more than 6,000 animals.

We still go out dog-catching and have regular sterilisation programs for the stray animals, but now increasing numbers of pet owners are showing up at the clinic to have their animals taken care of. This proves that we are making a difference and that our message is being heard.

Every single animal we sterilise also receives a free rabies vaccination at the same time. There has been no recorded case of rabies on Koh Lanta for fifteen years and we want to keep it that way. For owned animals we provide a combined vaccination against common diseases and encourage owners to return with their animals for boosters on a yearly basis.

Animals are brought to us with any number of ailments, from skin parasites to knife wounds or broken bones from road accidents. We treat them to the best of our ability, and for the more serious cases we recommend owners take their pets to vet hospitals in Trang or Krabi.

You are welcome to stop by! You will find us across from Pra Ae School, Long Beach, 100 meters from the road.

Our volunteers[]

Volunteers, please share experiences!

Here are some of the feedback we had from volunteers.

Sapna Malwal, Veterinarian from Canada:

“The clinic boasts an impressive air conditioned surgery suite with two surgery tables, steam sterilized surgery instruments, injectable anesthesia, and sterile/clean conditions that are often not seen in shelters even in the West!

The working days were long at LAW, but the pleasant company of the staff and fellow volunteers, as well as the rewarding nature of the work made the time go by fast. It was a great opportunity to not only get to know a community, but to also become a better doctor as you rely heavily on your intuition and physical exam skills in an environment such as this. But it wasn’t all work- in the evenings there was usually time for good conversation along with some beers and amazing Thai food. On the weekends, you were able to take some time off and enjoy the beaches and laid back island life. Overall, I think that LAW is great for vets who want to experience something different, explore a part of Thailand that is off the beaten path, as well as work with some great animals and people. The charity relies on continued support from volunteers and donors in order to remain successful.”

Maureen Henderson, General volunteer from UK:

“I had a fantastic experience; challenging at first, but then you fall in love with the animals! The dedication of the people out there is truly awesome and inspirational. I felt involved from the start and took on more responsibilities as my confidence grew. I have never worked with animals before; I learned so much and the experience has definately been lifechanging. By the end of the placement I was exhausted but soooooooooooooooo happy! I chose to take on additional work; volunteers are well looked after and their hours are flexible”
